The recording is normally done in Room 4 as it has the best isolation and acoustics. The recording control room is now larger and will hopefully soon have better creature comforts.
The main recording tool is an Allen & Heath MixWizard 16:2 desk which provides microphone amplification, eq, up to 4 aux mixes to feed headphones and direct outs to the soundcard.
We can record up to 8 tracks at once on the recording PC so with a typical rock band we usually record drums with 6 or 7 mics and a guide guitar or bass. It is also possible to perform guide parts in the control room to assist with recording. When the rythm part is solid, other instruments and vocals are then added. It is also possible to record 'live' in the studio. The recording software incorporates a useful suite of plug-ins with delays, equalisers etc.
Because we needed cost-effective recording software without resorting to piracy and also we do not like Microsoft products, we use a 64 bit 'Slackware' Linux operating system with 'Ardour' pro quality recording software, which only costs us a moderate (entirely voluntary) monthly subscription.
Recording time is charged at the bargain price of £15 per hour (or £16 if you use our drum kit).
Recording can be done presently on any week day in the daytime or on Saturday daytime. Mixing can be also be done on weekday evenings at £10 per hour.
